Kenya is taking a significant leap towards a greener future with a newly launched national draft policy aimed at promoting electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative comes despite Kenya's current lack of full EV production capabilities.

The draft policy has a three-pronged approach:

• Environmental Benefits: Shifting to EVs will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, combating climate change.

• Economic Boost: The policy seeks to lessen reliance on expensive oil imports (currently costing Kenya a whopping $4.8 billion annually). This will free up resources and potentially lower fuel prices for consumers. Additionally, the policy aims to create new jobs in the EV industry through local manufacturing and assembly.

• Sustainable Practices: The policy encourages the use of locally sourced materials in EVs, increasing local content gradually over time. It also aims to support the development of a local ecosystem for EV component production, battery manufacturing, recycling, and repurposing.

Early Signs of E-Mobility Adoption:

• Electric buses are already being used as commuter vehicles (known as matatus) in Nairobi, with companies like BasiGo leading the charge.

• ROAM Motors is offering electric motorbikes nationwide and is introducing electric buses for Nairobi's rapid transit system.

• Ride-hailing companies like Uber and Bolt are integrating electric vehicle options into their services, demonstrating a growing market for EVs.

Building the Infrastructure:

The draft policy, launched in collaboration with the trade and investment ministry, will leverage expertise from the private sector, international investors, and academic institutions. This collaboration is crucial for building the necessary infrastructure to support a thriving EV ecosystem in Kenya.

By taking these steps, Kenya positions itself as a frontrunner in African e-mobility, promoting environmental sustainability, economic growth, and job creation for the future.
